Walk into any modern hospital ward and you will see small outlet points on the wall behind each bed. Behind those outlets sits one of the most important pieces of hospital infrastructure: the medical gas pipeline system, usually shortened to MGPS. It quietly delivers life-supporting gases to patients around the clock, and it has to work every minute of every day.
This guide explains what an MGPS is, what it carries, and the main parts that make it work.
What a medical gas pipeline system does
An MGPS is a permanently installed network that carries medical gases from a central supply to the points where clinicians use them. Instead of wheeling heavy cylinders to every bedside, a hospital stores its gases in one plant room or manifold room and pipes them through the building. This is safer, more reliable and far less labour-intensive than handling individual cylinders on wards.
The gases most commonly distributed are:
- Medical oxygen, the most widely used gas for patients who need respiratory support.
- Medical air, used for ventilators and for driving nebulisers.
- Surgical air, supplied at a higher pressure to power surgical tools.
- Nitrous oxide and nitrous oxide/oxygen mixtures, used for anaesthesia and pain relief.
- Carbon dioxide, used in some surgical procedures.
- Medical vacuum, which is not a gas supply but a suction system used to clear airways and fluids.
The main components of an MGPS
1. Source of supply
Every gas starts at a source. For oxygen this might be a liquid oxygen tank, an oxygen concentrator plant or banks of high-pressure cylinders. Medical air usually comes from a compressor plant, and vacuum from a vacuum pump plant. Most sources have a duty supply, a standby supply and an emergency reserve so that the hospital is never left without gas.
2. Manifolds and control panels
Where cylinders are used, a manifold connects several cylinders together. A medical gas control panel regulates the pressure and switches automatically from an empty bank to a full one, so that the supply is not interrupted when cylinders run out.
3. Copper pipework
The distribution network itself is built from medical grade copper tubes joined with copper fittings. Copper is used because it is clean, compatible with oxygen, resistant to corrosion and easy to join reliably by brazing. The tubes are cleaned and degreased at the factory and supplied capped to keep contamination out.
4. Area valve service units and alarms
Isolation valves let maintenance teams shut off one zone without affecting the rest of the hospital. Pressure alarms warn staff immediately if a gas pressure rises or falls outside its safe range.
5. Terminal units and medical devices
At the end of the line are the outlet points, also called terminal units. Clinicians plug in devices such as oxygen regulators, flowmeters with humidifier bottles and vacuum regulators with suction jars. Each gas uses a different connector so that the wrong device cannot be plugged into the wrong gas.
Why quality matters so much
An MGPS is classed as a life-safety system. A leak, a blocked pipe or contamination inside the tubing can directly affect patients. That is why the design, materials, installation and testing are governed by standards such as ISO 7396-1, HTM 02-01 in the UK and NFPA 99 in the United States, alongside national regulations. After installation, every system is pressure tested, purged and checked for gas identity and purity before patient use.
For buyers and contractors, this means every component should come with clear documentation: material grade, the standard it is made to, cleanliness for oxygen service and a test certificate. Cheap, undocumented parts are a false economy in a system where failure is not an option.
