When engineers specify steel pipe, one of the first decisions is whether it should be seamless or welded. Both types are used everywhere from water lines to refineries, and both can be made in carbon, alloy and stainless steels. The choice affects cost, lead time, pressure capacity and inspection requirements. This guide explains the difference in plain terms.
How seamless pipe is made
Seamless pipe starts as a solid round steel billet. The billet is heated and pierced through its centre to form a hollow shell, which is then rolled and stretched to the required diameter and wall thickness. Some sizes are finished by cold drawing for tighter tolerances and a smoother surface. Because there is no weld anywhere along the length, the pipe has a uniform structure all the way round.
How welded pipe is made
Welded pipe starts as flat strip, plate or coil. The steel is formed into a round shape and the edges are joined along the length by welding. Common methods include electric resistance welding (ERW) for many carbon steel pipes and fusion welding methods such as TIG or laser welding for stainless steel pipe. After welding, the pipe may be heat treated, and the weld bead may be smoothed inside and out. Larger pipes can also be made by submerged arc welding from plate.
Key differences
Strength and pressure
Seamless pipe has no weld seam, so there is no line of potential weakness. For high pressures, high temperatures and cyclic loading, seamless pipe is often preferred or required. Modern welded pipe made to recognised standards is strong and reliable, but design codes may apply a weld joint factor that reduces its allowable pressure compared with seamless pipe of the same size.
Dimensions and tolerances
Welded pipe is made from rolled strip with consistent thickness, so it often has tighter wall thickness tolerances and better concentricity. Seamless pipe can show more variation in wall thickness around the circumference.
Sizes and availability
Welded pipe is available in very large diameters and thin walls that would be difficult to make seamlessly. Seamless pipe is strong in small and medium diameters with heavy walls.
Cost and lead time
Welded pipe is generally cheaper and more widely stocked, especially in common sizes. Seamless pipe costs more because of the more complex manufacturing process, and some sizes and grades have longer lead times.
Inspection
Welded pipe usually undergoes weld inspection, such as eddy current or ultrasonic testing of the seam. Both types are typically hydrostatically tested and supplied with mill test certificates.
Where each type is used
Seamless pipe is common in:
- High-pressure oil, gas and steam lines.
- Boilers, heat exchangers and superheaters.
- Hydraulic systems and critical process piping in refineries and power plants.
Welded pipe is common in:
- Water supply, drainage and low to medium pressure process lines.
- Structural applications, handrails and frameworks.
- Food, dairy and pharmaceutical lines in stainless steel, where smooth internal finishes matter.
Questions to ask before you specify
- What pressure and temperature will the pipe see in service?
- Does the design code or client specification require seamless pipe?
- Which material grade and standard apply?
- Is a tight wall tolerance or smooth bore more important than maximum pressure rating?
- What testing and certification do you need with the delivery?
Answering these questions early helps your supplier recommend the most economical pipe that still meets the duty.
A note on documentation
Whatever type you choose, insist on mill test certificates that state the standard, grade, heat number, chemical composition, mechanical properties and test results. Check that the heat number on the certificate matches the marking on the pipe itself. This traceability is what lets inspectors and clients accept the material with confidence.
